Keep your eyes down in February and you may well stumble upon the first unfoldings of the humble hellebore, or Lenten rose. These often underrated flowers add a welcome splash of colour in the winter months. Look out for the wicked Helleborus niger - the black hellebore which is highly toxic, and believed to be the hellebore used by Hippocrates as a purgative. Or seek out the subtle Helleborus x hybridus yellow, a delicious primrose yellow hellebore perfect to herald the return of spring.
If this is enough to put a spring in your step then our gorgeous book Hellebores is the one for you, hailed ‘indispensable' for all hellebore enthusiasts, by The Garden magazine.
